Background

The Greater Shenandoah Valley Brain Injury Support Group (GSVBISG) was organized in 2003 as a result of brain injury survivors and caregivers needing support and appropriate services. The first support group meeting was held September, 2003. 

We offer support to survivors of acquired and traumatic brain injuries and their families. We are actively involved in improving services to the Shenandoah Valley region, while promoting prevention and awareness. GSVBISG has been designated as a 501(c)(3) tax exempt public charity by the Internal Revenue Service. Donations are tax deductible.

Our meetings are open to the public. We welcome anyone who needs or wants to know more about this "hidden disability." We invite you to join us in this very important mission. 

We have Case Management Services available, at Brain Injury Connections of the Shenandoah Valley, bicsv.org (540-568-8923). 

We also are in need of: Residential Treatment, Community Living Services, Employment, Transportation, and Day/Long-Term Care facilities; Programs/Services, Social/Recreational/Peer Support;Individual/Family Supports, Educational/Awareness Services. 

We are creating partnerships for support and assistance to rebuild lives.

Our support group provides relevant speakers, activities, information, and socialization to the members.

Overview

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of death and disability in the United States, contributing to about 30% of all injury deaths. Every day, 138 people in the United States die from injuries that include TBI. Those who survive a TBI can face effects lasting a few days to disabilities which may last the rest of their lives. Effects of TBI can include impaired thinking or memory, movement, sensation (e.g., vision or hearing), or emotional functioning (e.g., personality changes, depression). These issues not only affect individuals but can have lasting effects on families and communities.
